Wind Energy Guide for County Commissioners pdf

Produced in conjunction with the National Association of Counties, the guide provides county commissioners, planners, and other local county government officials with a practical overview of information required to successfully implement commercial wind energy projects in their counties. We hope you will find this document useful in your outreach efforts.

Long Range Radar Tool

This tool allows wind project developers to check their proximity to Long Range Radars. These radar facilities were the primary concern during last year's project slow down in the upper Midwest. While all of the near-term projects affected last year were eventually allowed to proceed, the FAA wanted to give wind developers an earlier indication if a Long Range Radar concern might be raised by the Department of Defense, possibly triggering a "Notice of Presumed Hazard" notification from FAA and a more in-depth review or proposed turbines.

A few caveats:

  • This new FAA tool does NOT check for all potential radar interference at a site, only Long Range Radar

  • The map is color coded. Being in a "red" area does not mean you are prohibited from building there, it may just be more difficult to receive the necessary permits, and you may not receive them after all of the reviews are completed.

Wind Information on EERE
Wind energy uses the energy in the wind for practical purposes like generating electricity, charging batteries, pumping water, or grinding grain. Large, modern wind turbines operate together in wind farms to produce electricity for utilities. Small turbines are used by homeowners and remote villages to help meet energy needs.
